    Kiddie Kollege History

The doors of Kiddie Kollege opened January 14, 1974 at 603 S. Alston Ave., the former location of Southeastern Business College.

Prior to opening Kiddie Kollege the founders David and Lorraine Stith owned and operated Southeastern Business College from 1956 until 1973. The early 1970’s marked the beginning of the rise in technical schools such as Durham Tech (now known as Durham Technical Community College) and the decline of privately owned business schools.

David and Lorraine Stith were committed to the education field and decided instead of preparing young adults for the work force they would prepare young children for the education force. The creation of Kiddie Kollege marked the beginning of a long standing commitment to provide a high quality preschool education to the youngest citizens of the Durham Community.

In 1983 Kiddie Kollege moved to a temporary location at 810 Plum St. until the present location at 618 Hope Ave was built in 1985. The building contains approximately 2,000 square feet of indoor space and 3,000 square feet of outdoor space.

In an effort to meet the increasing demand for infant/toddler care a satellite infant/toddler center was established to meet this critical need. This center is located at 1708 Athens Ave. and has approximately 1000 square feet of indoor space and 15,000 square feet of outdoor space.

When Kiddie Kollege was first established there was a strong commitment to provide high quality child care and that commitment has been maintained through to the present. Numerous grants have been awarded from local agencies to assist in improving the quality of child care. Kiddie Kollege is a proud member of the Duke Child Care Partnership and most notably has achieved a 5-star license, which is the highest licensing granted by the North Carolina Division of Child Development.

    Kiddie Kollege Philosophy

There is an increasing emphasis on the education of the pre-school child. The program at Kiddie Kollege is flexible, with opportunities for meeting the individual and group needs as situations arise.

We believe that children who have had many rich and satisfying experiences in pre-school will be prepared to meet the challenges in grade school.

Children should not be confined to a routine atmosphere with little or no emphasis placed on constructive learning. All children love to play; this is a normal and healthy outlet both physically and mentally. We believe that by including learning activities as play in addition to teacher directed activities, we stimulate the child, enabling the child to develop their social, physical, emotional and cognitive skills.

We believe that learning goes from general to specific, that is reaches plateaus and regressions and that it is cumulative and continuous.

    Our Mission

Kiddie Kollege’s mission is to provide a safe and healthy environment for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children so that the following goals may be reached:

    - Make a successful transition from home life to school life and learn to
      interact with other children.

    - Provide the child with freedom and opportunities to develop physical, social,
      emotional and cognitive skills.

    - Develop a positive self-image (feeling of success).

    - Development of the whole child, i.e. provide experiences for all children so they may
      reach their stage of development.

    - Develop responsibility and self-control.

    - Develop an unselfish nature with a positive attitude, gratitude and respect
       for others.

    - Develop in the child through the pre-school experience an excitement
about learning and moving to the next educational level.
